Jaime Munguia Says GGG Is No Longer The Same Fighter, But Still Wants To Face Him
Jaime Munguia is hoping to face Gennady Golovkin next time out.
Munguia is set to continue his run at middleweight on April 23, when he faces another unbeaten fighter in, D’Mitrius Ballard. Ballard is taking the fight on short notice, replacing Maciej Sulecki. It’s an interesting fight because they were supposed to fight in 2018 but the Nevada State Athletic Commission didn’t approve it at the time.
Although Munguia is focused on his fight on April 23, he still hopes he can fight GGG next time out. Golovkin is one of the best boxers, but he is now 40, so the undefeated fighter believes GGG is past his prime and is no longer the elite fighter he was.
“In this sport you never finish learning. Every workout, every fight is a new experience, so we keep learning, working. I’m still very young and I can keep getting better and that gives me confidence that we’re going to get in a better position than the last fight,” Munguia told George Ebro (via boxingscene).
“I see things positively [for myself at 160]. I think there’s a great future for me in this division,” Munguia continued. “There are very good fighters, great opponents. I wish I was fighting for a world championship maybe this year or next year, but we’re going to try to keep progressing.
“Lucky or unfortunately, the fight with Golovkin hasn’t happened. I’m not really desperate for that fight. Obviously, if it ever occurs, it would be an honor for me to face him,” Munguia concluded. “He is no longer the same [at age 39], but I have great respect for him. He’s a great fighter and as I’ve always said, we have to be very careful when we fight him.”
The fight does make some sense as Munguia would get some hype around him if he beat GGG.
