Jake Paul Thinks The WBC Ranking Him Is ‘Cool’
Jake Paul says it’s cool that the WBC will rank him if he beats Tommy Fury on Sunday.
Paul is set to take on Fury in the main event of a Top Rank pay-per-view on ESPN+ on Sunday in Saudi Arabia. Ahead of the fight, the WBC announced that if Paul wins, the WBC would be ranking him at cruiserweight.
“Jake Paul has been close to the WBC for several years, starting with the first event promoted in the UK when his brother, Logan, fought KSI. On that night Jake won the WBC amateur belt in the undercard fights,” the WBC said to Sky Sports. “Jake has dedication and respect to the sport and the WBC will not tolerate discrimination against anyone. He deserves the opportunities that any other boxer has. He demonstrated punching power and improved skills as well as a solid chin. Tommy Fury represents a clear challenge to Paul in a battle of two undefeated professional boxers.”
Now, ahead of Paul’s return fight against Fury, the YouTuber-turned-boxer says it is cool to be ranked assuming he wins. He also says it is in the step in the right direction as he has been vocal about becoming a champion in boxing.
“I think it’s cool if [the WBC] want to rank me, that’s fine. It’s not up to me. I’m not in control of the WBC and whatever it is that they want to do,” Paul told Sky Sports. “I’m challenging myself more than most pro fighters, all pro fighters, in their seventh fight. Most pro fighters in their seventh fight are fighting guys with losing records. I’m fighting now Tommy Fury, legendary bloodline, 8-0, in just my seventh fight. I’ve beaten a lot of people in sparring who are in the cruiserweight rankings so to me it makes sense. But of course the purists are always going to be mad at me.”
Jake Paul is 6-0 as a pro and coming off a decision win over Anderson Silva.
