Jermall Charlo Retains WBC Middleweight Title With Win Over Juan Macias Montiel, Calls Out GGG
Jermall Charlo is still the WBC middleweight champion.
On Saturday night in Houston, Charlo dominated Juan Macias Montiel for the entire fight and won a clear-cut decision. Throughout the fight, Charlo rocked the Mexican several times but couldn’t get the finish. The champ put on a beating in the fifth round and a stoppage seemed likely in the sixth round. Yet, the challenger came back and even cut Charlo but it wasn’t enough.
When the final bell rang it was Charlo winning by unanimous decision with scorecards of 120-108, 119-109 and 118-109.
“It takes a real warrior to get into the ring with me,” Charlo said during his post-fight interview (via DAZN). “I can tell in his eyes he’s a true warrior from the beginning. He wanted to fight.”
After the win, many already wondered who would be next for the fan-favorite in Charlo. However, it didn’t take long for many to get an idea as the champ called out Gennady Golovkin in a very intriguing matchup.
“160 is my weight division, Charlo said. “I want to unify. I want to get Golovkin in the ring. I want to bring him to Houston. I want to get Canelo out here to Houston. If they are willing to come down to 160, this is my weight division. I’m going to stay here. I’m going to reign at 160. This is my fourth title, and I got many more to go. I’m young. I’m hungry. I’m ready. Golovkin is about to unify, so maybe we can fight for all those belts he’s going to get, or I’ll fight the winner,” Charlo continued on if it’s realistic that he’ll fight Golovkin.”
Whether or not Charlo will face GGG next is uncertain. Regardless of who’s next, Charlo proved he’s an elite fighter and remains a champ and undefeated.
