Joe Joyce Triggers Rematch Clause Against Zhilei Zhang
Joe Joyce has triggered his rematch clause against Zhilei Zhang.
Joyce’s manager, Shane Watson revealed his client has triggered the rematch clause against Zhang, following his stunning upset stoppage loss. After the loss, it was uncertain if he would trigger the rematch clause as Frank Warren thought Joyce may take another fight before taking a rematch.
“Zhilei is under contract with Queensberry for the foreseeable future and he’s got a great group of people we work with for him. If Joe wants that rematch, it’s his right to invoke it, it’s not ours. Our relationship with Zhilei will continue if he doesn’t, he’s got that decision to make,” Warren said to talkSPORT Breakfast. “He can do it immediately. He could take a fight and we could look to revisit it later in the year. At the moment, we’ve got to see how bad that eye is. We are going to have to assess it, he’s going to have to look at the performance and what went wrong but that decision on the rematch is down to him.”
However, despite what Frank Warren said, Shane Watson said Joe Joyce made it clear he wanted an immediate rematch so they have activated the rematch clause.
“The first fight was what it was. Joe knows how to put it right. We spoke about an interim fight but Joe made it clear he wanted the rematch as soon as possible and this shows how Joe will take any top heavyweight on at anytime,” Watson told Talk Sport.
As of right now, it’s uncertain when the rematch will take place but with Joe Joyce triggering the rematch clause, it takes Zhang out of the running to face Tyson Fury in July.
