John Fury Predicts MMA Run For Tyson After Boxing Career
John Fury believes his son, Tyson, will make the transition to MMA once he hangs up his boxing gloves.
Tyson Fury is the current WBC Heavyweight Champion. He’s set for a trilogy fight against Deontay Wilder on Oct. 9. If Fury gets past Wilder and Anthony Joshua defeats Oleksandr Usyk, then we could be in for a massive title unification clash between Fury and Joshua in 2022.
When the dust settles on Fury’s boxing career, he’ll undoubtedly be ranked high among the top heavyweight boxers in history. The question remains, what would be next?
Speaking to MMA analyst and fighter Dan Hardy for JOE, John said that he sees Tyson following through with a journey into MMA.
“With the right training, he’d do very well. I’ve seen him excel in different sports like wrestling, so I’ve got kind of an idea what Tyson was from that. I know he can use more than his hands. He’s quick, light on his feet and I do believe, if a top MMA trainer took him on, he could do big things with him – ask Darren Till.
“The rougher it gets with Tyson, the better he likes it. When he does finally retire from boxing, he’ll probably go to that [referring to MMA] and come back to boxing, but he will engage on that you’ll see.”
Back in January 2020, Fury told ESPN Radio that he doesn’t want to compete in MMA but he’d do a cage fight with standup rules (h/t Bloody Elbow).
“I don’t want to go into an MMA fight, rolling around the floor and all that, no. But I would fight one of their champions in small gloves. Maybe in a cage, but with boxing rules. I think that would be very interesting. … With UFC gloves, the little 4-ounce gloves, that would be good for me.”
