John Ryder Eyes Canelo Alvarez Rematch
John Ryder is hoping to secure a rematch with Canelo Alvarez.
Ryder is set to return to the ring on Saturday against Jamie Munguia at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. It’s an intriguing matchup and although Ryder is the underdog, he hopes a win can set up a rematch with Alvarez as he wants the biggest matchup.
“I kind of somewhat came away as a winner. It’s done my career a world of good in the aspect that I’m still aligned for big fights. That’s why I’m here,” Ryder said during a media workout (h/t BoxingScene). “I’m definitely looking for the Canelo rematch. The biggest and best fight possible for me. I have to win this time [if given the opportunity for a rematch against Alvarez]. Not to get my nose broken, and to go in there and put on a show and take his belts.”
John Ryder and Canelo Alvarez fought back in May of last year and the Mexican cruised to a decision win.
Although the fight wasn’t too competitive, Ryder believes he has learned a lot and is hoping to get big fights after he upsets Munguia.
“I believe so, yeah, that [I am a different fighter now than a couple of years ago]. I’ve learned a ton about myself,” said Ryder. “I wish I would have had that Canelo fight 10 years ago. I’m here now. The fire still burns deep.”
John Ryder is currently 32-6 as a pro and before the loss to Alvarez, he was on a four-fight winning streak. On the win streak, Ryder had wins over Zach Parker and Daniel Jacobs.
