Josh Taylor Believes Jose Ramirez Fight Is One Of The Biggest In Boxing
WBA, IBF junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor is currently in training for a fight with his mandatory challenger Apinun Khongsong on September 26. The Scottish fighter has taken time away from his preparations for Khongsong to speak about a potential undisputed bout with Jose Ramirez who currently holds the WBC and WBO 140lb titles.
In an interview with BBC Scotland Taylor looked forward to a 2021 clash Ramirez which he believes is one of the biggest fights in boxing he said.
“It’s a massive fight. Outside the heavyweights – Joshua, Fury and Wilder – and maybe Canelo’s next fight, I think it’s one of the biggest fights in boxing. It doesn’t happen often in the game that you get a fight for all the belts. I do think it’s one of the biggest fights in boxing at the minute, a mouth-watering fight. There’s only one winner though and that’s me.
“That’s why I signed with Top Rank because all these fights should be easy to make. They’ve also said fighting in Scotland is not off the table, so that’s what I want to do. To see my name in bright lights at the MGM Grand or Madison Square Garden, every fighter dreams of that. But having a fight at Edinburgh Castle or Easter Road would just be amazing for Scottish sport. Especially a fight at the Castle with that backdrop, it would be an iconic moment in Scottish sporting history.”
Taylor was last seen in action against Regis Prograis in the World Boxing Super Series 140lb final in October 2019. ‘The Tartan Tornado’ edged out Prograis to claim the Muhammad Ali trophy and unify the division.
Ramirez also unified in 2019 when he stopped Maurice Hooker inside six rounds. The undefeated fighter has since gone on to defend his two belts against long-time contender Viktor Postol beating the Ukrainian by majority decision just a few weeks ago.
Do you agree with Josh Taylor? Would a fight between him and Jose Ramirez be one of the biggest in boxing?
