Julio Cesar Chavez Believes Canelo Alvarez Is Pound-For-Pound Best, But Terence Crawford Is The More Complete Boxer

Boxing legend, Julio Cesar Chavez believes Canelo Alvarez is the best pound-for-pound fighter, but doesn’t think he is the most complete boxer.

For many people, the top pound-for-pound boxer came down to three names in Canelo Alvarez, Terence Crawford, and Vasiliy Lomachenko until he lost to Teofimo Lopez. So, for Chavez, he says Alvarez should be ranked as the pound-for-pound best but says Crawford is the best boxer.

“For me [the best pound-for-pound fighter] is still Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, because of the kind of opposition he has had. I think it’s between Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez, but I definitely think that Alvarez has [the top spot]… with all due respect, whether you like it or not and many people like him…. but he has had better opposition,” Chavez said to David Faitelson.

“”The opponents that Canelo has had position him as the best pound-for-pound fighter, although for me Terence Crawford is much better [as a boxer], more complete than Canelo Alvarez,” Chavez said (via BoxingScene).

Canelo Alvarez is currently 53-1-2 with his only loss coming to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013. He does have notable wins over Gennady Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev, Shane Mosley, Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr., and Amir Khan among others.

The Mexican currently is having contract issued with DAZN and Golden Boy Promotions.

Terence Crawford, meanwhile, is a perfect 36-0 and set to fight Kell Brook on November 14 where he is looking to defend his welterweight title. The American has notable wins over Amir Khan, Jeff Horn, and Felix Diaz among others. Many fans are also hoping he will fight Errol Spence Jr. or Manny Pacquiao in the near future.

The pound-for-pound debate will always be one people will have with no clear-cut answer on who it will be. However, for most, it really comes down to Canelo Alvarez or Terence Crawford.
