Julio Cesar Chavez Sr: Caleb Plant A ‘Good Fighter’ But ‘Canelo Is In His Prime’
Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. isn’t expecting an upset when Canelo Alvarez faces Caleb Plant.
The pair are set to collide in a super middleweight title unification clash taking place November 6 in Las Vegas.
Many believe it’s a foregone conclusion with Alvarez heavily tipped to defeat Plant and unify the 168-pound division.
Plant, however, is expecting to make things look easy and become the first since Floyd Mayweather in 2013 to defeat Alvarez.
Chavez Sr. acknowledges the IBF super middleweight champion in Plant as a good fighter. That said, he only sees one winner and that’s Alvarez who is in his prime.
“It’s a fight where the early rounds are going to be difficult, but I think Canelo is going to prevail with his boxing, his strength and he is going to end up beating Caleb Plant,” Chavez told Little Giant Boxing (via Boxing Scene). I don’t know if he’s going to do it by knockout or by decision, but he is going to win. I’ve seen Caleb Plant fight and he’s a good fighter, but he’s not a fighter who can beat Canelo. Canelo is in his prime and nobody beats him right now, so he is going to retain his titles.”
With the fight in Las Vegas, a large number of Mexican fans will be in attendance for Alvarez while the crowd in general will more than likely be rooting for him over Plant.
That will only make the American’s job harder according to Chavez.
“[Plant will] feel the pressure because all of the people are supporting your opponent,” he added. “Every punch that you seem to land, it’s as if you didn’t do anything and that is gradually undermining the fighter mentally.”
What do you think of Chavez Sr’s assessment?
