Liam Smith Hopes To Fight Jessie Vargas Next
Liam Smith has eyes on his next opponent after his TKO win over Anthony Fowler.
The first round was a tough one for Smith, but after that, he began to dominate Fowler and eventually got the eighth-round TKO in front of a rowdy crowd at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool. With the win, he claimed the WBA International super-welterweight title, and now he wants to fight Jessie Vargas next.
“It was a great fight and I knew it would be competitive, especially for the first six rounds. He’s a quality fighter when he’s fresh, but I said all along about experience. I feel I’ve got a good enough chin at this level as I’ve been hit by bigger punchers,” Smith said (via BoxingScene). “I started slow, but then I did a good job after that. I thought it was over in the fifth, so he did well getting up. I let him off the hook a bit in the next round too.
“I had to make it personal on my own behalf, as if I lost I was finished, so I had to do something to switch it on. Hopefully we can make the Jessie Vargas fight now. Thank you to everyone who came out, it was a night I’ll never forget,” Smith continued.
Vargas is the former WBO welterweight champion and WBA (Regular) and IBO super lightweight champion. He has not fought since he lost a decision to Mikey Garcia in February of 2020. In his career, he has fought the likes of Adrien Broner, Manny Pacquiao, Timothy Bradley, and Thomas Dulorme among others.
It would be a tough test for Smith but it is a fight he wants and one that does make some sense. Whether or not it happens next is to be seen.
