Liam Smith Open To Chris Eubank Jr. Rematch, But Eyes Brook Or Golovkin Next
Liam Smith is open to running it back with Chris Eubank Jr. if he triggers his rematch clause, but eyes Kell Brook or Gennady Golovkin.
Smith was moving up in weight to face Eubank Jr. and in the fourth round, Smith dropped Eubank Jr. and when Eubank Jr. got up, he was dropped again and the fight was stopped.
After the loss, Eubank Jr. said he was the better boxer but got caught and plans on triggering his rematch clause. If that happens, Liam Smith is happy to rematch him but is also happy to face Kell Brook or Gennady Golovkin next.
“He has to sit with his own team, his own family, and see if he wants this rematch,” Smith said (via BoxingScene). “But, you know, I’m open to anything, and I always have been. I always have been open to anything. And you ask anyone who has dealt with me over the years, I’m not a hard one to deal with. But, you know, if it’s Chris next, it’s Chris next. If not, we can sit down and I’ve got very good options now. I’m in a good position. You know, [BOXXER’s] Ben [Shalom] said Kell [Brook] wants to fight the winner. I know that’s a huge fight. I know there’s talks of [Gennadiy] Golovkin. So, I’m in a good position now at 160, as well as 154. So, you know, it’s again just a win that mattered [Saturday night].”
As of right now, it does seem likely that Eubank Jr. will rematch Smith next. If Smith does win again, perhaps he gets a fight against Brook or GGG.
Liam Smith (33-3-1) is now on a four-fight winning streak as before the win over Eubank Jr., he had TKO wins over Hassan Mwakinyo, Jessie Vargas, and Anthony Fowler. In his career, he also holds notable wins over Liam Williams, Jimmy Kelly, and Roberto Garcia among others.
