Luis Ortiz Would Love To Box Andy Ruiz
Luis Ortiz, the former WBA interim and WBA inter-contential heavyweight champion, is hoping to face Andy Ruiz next time out.
Ortiz, who is 42-years-old, is coming off a KO win over Alexander Flores in November to return to the win column after being knocked out by Deontay Wilder for the WBC heavyweight title. It was the second time he suffered a knockout loss to Wilder. Ruiz, meanwhile, returned to the win column with a decision victory over Chris Arreola, in a fight he was knocked down early.
For Ortiz, he believes the fight against Ruiz make sense as he wants to prove he’s the best Latino heavyweight fighter.
“Congratulations to Andy Ruiz on overcoming the early (knockdown) to win the fight,” Ortiz told BoxingScene.com. “But he didn’t really accomplish anything other than getting back in the ring. He chose Arreola for his comeback fight, while in my case nobody chooses me. I’m not even left with an Arreola, and that continues to frustrate me. I would love nothing more than to face Andy and prove that I am the best Latino heavyweight in the business.”
Ruiz, meanwhile, also likes the idea of fighting Ortiz, which he mentioned after his win. However, many fans thought he should fight Deontay Wilder next as the winner would then face the winner of Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury.
“We’ve just gotta talk to [adviser] Al Haymon,” Ruiz said during the post-fight press conference. “I think that would be an exciting fight as well… me and Luis Ortiz. I’ve just gotta get back in the ring, gotta get back on to training, so I could feel good, feel better and take this ring rust out of here.”
