Mayweather Dismisses Notion That He Fought A Past His Prime Pacquiao
Floyd Mayweather has blasted the naysayers who claim he only fought Manny Pacquiao past his prime.
Back in May 2015, Mayweather and Pacquiao finally shared the ring. Many had been calling for the bout to take place for several years. When the fight happened, Mayweather cruised to a unanimous decision victory.
During a recent interview with rapper Fat Joe, Mayweather addressed the critics who say that “Money” didn’t fight Pacquiao until he was past his prime.
“We keep on saying ‘at our prime,’ I’m older than Pacquiao by about two years. We keep on saying, ‘in our prime,’ so when I beat Pacquiao they said he wasn’t in his prime. I’m older than you. And then when I fought Oscar De La Hoya, they said, ‘oh he’s old.’ Me and Oscar, we both were in our ’30s.
“No matter what happens it’s never good enough for anyone. As long as I’m happy that’s all that’s important.”
Pacquiao is still one of the top boxers today at age 42. Back in July 2019, he handed Keith Thurman the first loss of his pro boxing career via split decision. Many argue that the one judge who scored the fight for Thurman was way off. Pacquiao was expected to challenge Errol Spence Jr. for the WBC and IBF Welterweight Titles but Spence pulled out of the fight due to a retinal tear.
Pacquiao will instead meet Yordenis Ugas for the WBA Welterweight Championship on Aug. 21. The bout will be held inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
As for Floyd Mayweather, he retired from professional boxing after his 10th-round TKO victory over Conor McGregor back in Aug. 2017. He has had two exhibition boxing matches since that fight. He stopped Japanese kickboxing sensation Tenshin Nasukawa back in Dec. 2018 and went the distance with Logan Paul back in June.
