John Fury: Floyd Mayweather Is Making A Mockery Of Boxing
There’s been talk over the last several months of perhaps the best boxer in the sports history, Floyd Mayweather Jr facing YouTube star Logan Paul in an exhibition boxing match later this year.
This has stirred up some controversy among the professional boxing community.
Tyson Fury’s father, John Fury was interviewed by iFL TV and was asked about his thoughts on the matter, and replied with the following:
“It’s making a mockery of boxing, isn’t it? Come on Floyd, are ya skint of something? He’s got all the money in the world, a man of his caliber messing with a YouTuber. I can backhand Logan Paul, they’re not even fighters are they? They’re YouTubers!
“He wouldn’t fight Tommy (Fury), so what the hell’s he going with Mayweather for? The pound-for-pound best in the world. Come on Floyd, get your act together mate. Stop ridiculing the sport with these idiots for a few quid.
“You’ve got enough money. You know all these billionaires, you know what their problem is? How to make another million on top of the hundreds of millions I’ve already got. And it worries them, they lose sleep over it.”
Mr. Fury went on to say: “I’m a hardcore boxing nut, so you can’t put crap in front of me and expect me to enjoy it.”
This wouldn’t be the first time Mayweather has had an exhibition fight, as he fought kickboxing standout Tenshin Nasukawa for charity in late 2018. This one’s a bit different than that however.
Nasukawa was just 20-years-old when they fought, he’s absolutely tiny compared to Mayweather, and despite going 105-5-1 in amateur kickboxing, 29-0 (now 37-0) in professional kickboxing, and 4-0 in professional MMA, but he hadn’t ever fought in boxing.
Mayweather TKO’d Nasukawa in round one, and he hasn’t stepped into a ring to compete since.
Logan Paul isn’t anywhere near as skilled as Nasukawa anywhere, but he is a big man, and he has fought in boxing before.
He had one amateur bout against KSI, which resulted in a draw, and one professional bout, a rematch with KSI, where he lost via split decision, both of which were six-round bouts.
Though Paul’s only had two boxing fights, he’s a behemoth compared to Mayweather, standing 6’2”, having fought at 200 lbs.
The highest weight Mayweather ever fought was at 154 lbs in his last professional bout against Conor McGregor, and he stands just 5’8”’.
It’s evident Mayweather wants to do something different in his retirement, putting on fights that entertain, rather than continuing to try and prove he’s the best. At 43-years-old, it’s a smart move on the 1996 Olympic bronze medalists part.
Do you like seeing Floyd Mayweather in exhibition boxing bouts at this point in his career?
