Mikaela Mayer Plans To Go To 135, Eyes Fight With Katie Taylor
Mikaela Mayer is hoping to set up a fight with Katie Taylor at 135.
The former unified super featherweight world champion in Mayer says she is eager to test herself against Taylor. Mayer will have her next fight at lightweight, as she’s coming off a controversial decision loss to Alycia Baumgardner in October.
With Mayer not getting the rematch with Baumgardner, the plan is to go to 135lbs, and she believes she can have success at the weight class.
“I’m going up to 135 for this next fight, I’m going to start making a name for myself in that division,” said Mayer to Sky Sports. “Katie Taylor has always been on my list. I have a lot of respect for her, she has accomplished a lot in this sport and I want to challenge myself against her. I definitely hope to get that fight made some time in 2023, and I’m not going to stop there. I feel like I have the size and skill to go up to 140 and 147.
“That’s what’s great about the women of this era, we’re willing to challenge ourselves in multiple weight divisions. We go where the big fights are,” Mayer continued. “It would be great [to fight Taylor]. We both have proven ourselves. She’s obviously been proven for many years but I think I had a great year. I feel like I have a very strong fanbase and I think people want to see that fight. Hopefully, we can get it done.”
Mikaela Mayer is 17-1 as a pro and before the loss to Baumgardner she had notable wins over Jennifer Han, Erica Farias, Helen Joseph, and Ewa Brodnicka among others.
