Mikaela Mayer Thinks Katie Taylor Is On A Decline, Needs To Train Smarter
Mikaela Mayer believes Katie Taylor is on a decline.
Taylor suffered her first career loss as she was fighting back home in Ireland and lost to Chantelle Cameron by decision. The result was stunning as many expected Taylor to get the win and set up another massive fight against Amanda Serrano.
Yet, after her performance on the weekend, Mayer thinks Taylor is on the decline and at 36-years-old, her age is finally catching up to her.
“I do think Katie Taylor is a bit on the decline. It’s not a shot at her because she’s 36 and has taken on every challenge possible,” Mayer told BBC Sport. “But if you look back a couple of years, she was so quick and so explosive throughout a ten round fight and it looks like she doesn’t have that in her now. She needs to train smarter not harder for the rematch.”
Although Mikaela Mayer thinks Katie Taylor is on a decline, Eddie Hearn thinks credit goes to Chantelle Cameron as Hearn says her run is incredible.
“Jessica McCaskill was undisputed at 147-pounds; she came down to challenge Chantelle for undisputed [at junior welterweight]. Katie came up; she’s undisputed lightweight,” Hearn said. “She’s beat two reigning undisputed champions back-to-back. Incredible run,” Hearn said.
As of right now, there is no timeline as to when the Taylor-Cameron rematch will happen is uncertain. If the rematch does happen, Mayer thinks Taylor needs to train much differently this time out.
