Mikey Garcia Reacts To His Upset Loss Against Sandor Martin
Four division world champion Mikey Garcia suffered what will probably go down as the biggest upset of 2021 last night when he dropped to a majority decision defeat against Sandor Martin in Fresno, California.
The 28-year-old underdog was able to use his elusive movement, impregnable defense, and sharp counter striking throughout the fight to pick up a deserved win on the judge’s scorecard which read 95-95, 97-93, and 97-93 for Martin.
Garcia was of the opinion he did enough to win the fight.
“He was the one running around a lot. I thought I was winning the fight in a close matchup. I thought I did enough to win the rounds. I was the aggressor looking to make the fight. There’s no excuses, that’s the way it is,” Garcia said.
It was only the second defeat of Garcia’s career. The first came in 2019 when he stepped up to welterweight to take on Errol Spence and was subsequently dominated over 12 rounds.
The 33-year-old bounced back from that loss with a unanimous decision win over Jessie Vargas last time out. That fight took place almost two years ago so perhaps Garcia was suffering from a bit of ring rust last night.
Martin always believed he would be too big for Garcia in the 145lb catchweight bout.
“He’s a legend, it was a pleasure to share the ring with him,” Martin said. “It’s the best moment of my career. I always said I was going to do it and I did it.
“I know myself; I know my capability. He’s a complete boxer but he’s not a natural 147-pounder.” (Transcribed by Boxing Scene)
