Oleksandr Usyk Says Upcoming Fight In Poland Is Closest He Will Get To A Homecoming
Oleksandr Usyk believes his upcoming fight in Poland will be the closest thing he gets to fighting at home.
Usyk hails from Ukraine, but due to the ongoing Russian war a boxing bout there seems unlikely. With that, his title defense on August 26 against Daniel Dubois will take place at the Tarczynski Arena Wroclaw in Wroclaw, Poland. Although it is not a fight in Ukraine, Usyk says he is happy to fight in Poland.
“I’ve traveled the world fighting in the backyard of my opponents,” Usyk told the assembled media. “This fight here in Poland will be the closest I get to a homecoming. I hope you enjoy everything that will happen on August 26 in Wroclaw.”
Oleksandr Usyk is a perfect 20-0 and coming off back-to-back wins over Anthony Joshua to become the heavyweight champion. Although it isn’t the fight against Tyson Fury that Usyk wanted, the champ is excited about the matchup against Dubois and to fight in Poland.
“I want to thank all of the troops who are defending Ukraine. Because of them, I have the opportunity to be here to defend my heavyweight titles,” Usyk stated. This country has always been kind to me. I became the WBO cruiserweight champion of the world here when I beat Krzysztof Glowacki. I have spent the past seven years collecting more world titles. Now I am back in Poland to defend (the unified heavyweight crown). Thank you to Poland for your support to the people in Ukraine.”
Should Usyk beat Dubois on August 26, perhaps he gets the matchup against Tyson Fury he has desired. But, first, he needs to defeat Dubois in Poland.
