Oleksandr Usyk vs. Anthony Joshua 2 Set For August 20
Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua have their rematch booked.
Usyk and Joshua fought last September and it was Usyk cruising to a decision win. After the fight, it was clear the two would have their rematch and now, Matchroom Boxing announced the rematch is on for August 20 in Saudi Arabia.
This is a crucial fight for Joshua as if he looks to reclaim his heavyweight titles. If he loses, where he goes from here is uncertain as it would take him a while to get a shot to become the champ again. As for Usyk, if he wins, it would only cement himself as one of the best and could set him up to get an undisputed heavyweight title fight.
It is also a bit of a surprise to see the rematch take place in Saudi Arabia as Eddie Hearn was vocal in saying it will not happen there.
“You’ve mentioned Saudi, it’s not definitely taking place there. We’ve had a number of offers from the Middle East. UK – obviously for the rematch is where AJ would prefer that fight to take place. But it’s so far out on the numbers. The US is a more lucrative site. But again you have to understand this fight is a financial split between Usyk and AJ,” Hearn said.”
Oleksandr Usyk (19-0) is coming off the win over Joshua and before that, he beat Derek Chisora by decision to earn the fight with Joshua. He’s also the former undisputed cruiserweight champion.
Anthony Joshua (24-2) lost his heavyweight titles to Usyk after knocking out Kubrat Pulev to retain his belts after reclaiming his belts against Andy Ruiz Jr. He also holds notable wins over Alexander Povetkin, Wladimir Klitschko, and Joseph Parker among others.
