Oscar De La Hoya Says 2023 Goal Is To Make Golovkin vs. Munguia
Oscar De La Hoya wants to see Gennady Golovkin vs. Jaime Munguia this year.
Munguia is a perfect 41-0 but many have been critical of the opponents he has faced as he has yet to face a big name. However, his skills are clearly there and De La Hoya hopes he can get Golovkin and his team to agree to the fight and make it happen in 2023.
“That’s a big possibility, a fight with Jaime Munguia and Triple G,” De La Hoya told The DAZN Boxing Show. “I think both guys have to prove themselves in a way. I think that fight would be perfect. I think that’s the fight to make. We’ve already reached out To Triple G’s people. I strongly feel that Jaime Munguia is ready for anybody. So that’s my goal for 2023, to make Jaime Munguia the best fighter possible and to get him to a world title. But first and foremost I want him to fight Triple G.”
A bout between Golovkin and Munguia would be massive and it would be the first true test for the undefeated fighter. Should Golovkin win, he would derail the hype and immediately be back in the title picture so it also makes sense for him. It’s also a fight Munguia has called for numerous times throughout his career.
However, although Oscar De La Hoya wants to see Jamie Munguia face Gennady Golovkin, the promoter admits getting Munguia fights has been difficult.
“It’s a little difficult to make fights with him (Munguia) for some reason because all the fighters that he can fight are with PBC,” De La Hoya said of Munguia. “And so what I’m optimistic about is making this Ryan Garcia fight with Tank, we can start working together and make the big fights happen.”
