Oscar De La Hoya Says Teofimo Lopez Would Beat Ryan Garcia Today, But Garcia Can Win In A Year
Oscar De La Hoya, the head of Golden Boy Promotions, who promotes Ryan Garcia gave an interesting answer when asked if Garcia would beat Teofimo Lopez.
Garcia is the main star for Golden Boy Promotions as he is one of boxing’s top-up-and-coming boxers. He’s only 23-years-old but is 21-0 and coming off a TKO win over Luke Campbell in January to win the WBC interim lightweight title. The hope was he would fight someone like Tank Davis or Lopez next, but if he fought Lopez today, his own promoter in De La Hoya believes Lopez would win.
“Ryan or Teofimo?,” De La Hoya said during an Instagram Live session (via Boxingscene). “Oh f—…Ryan or Tefimo..If the fight was done today, I’d have to go with Teofimo. I say that because, you know why? Teofimo has more experience, he fought [Vasiliy] Lomachenko which took him to another level.”
Although De La Hoya believes Lopez would beat Garcia if they fought today if they box in a year from now, the promoter’s answer changes.
“But if Ryan fought him a year from now and gets experience, Ryan has the skill and the talent to beat him,” De La Hoya said.
Regardless of who he thinks will win, Oscar De La Hoya knows Ryan Garcia vs. Teofimo Lopez is a massive fight for boxing and believes it could be a trilogy bout.
“Both guys can create a trilogy and f—— incredible, freaking amazing fights for us in boxing,” he said.
Garcia is set to return to the ring on November 27 against Joseph Diaz where he once again is fighting for the WBC interim lightweight title. Garcia was stripped of the belt due to inactivity as he pulled out of fight as he was dealing with mental health issues.
