Oscar De La Hoya Wants Vergil Ortiz Jr -Terence Crawford Bout
Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya is interested in matching his rising welterweight star Vergil Ortiz Jr with Terence Crawford. The 22-year-old Ortiz Jr is 16-0 as a pro, with all his wins coming via knockout.
The Texas native’s most recent bout back in July saw him stop Colombian veteran Samuel Vargas in the seventh-round. It seems only a matter of time before Ortiz Jr captures his first world title.
“The only guy that I would think twice about would be Terence Crawford, but still, it’s a fight that I would love to make now. I would put him in with Crawford next. We would most definitely do Crawford versus Vergil,” De La Hoya said in an interview with BoxingScene.
Crawford currently remains tied with Top Rank Boxing. However, that relationship has turned decidedly rocky over the past few weeks, with Top Rank’s Bob Arum stating that he loses money when Crawford fights. It could be the case that the two parties go their separate ways, but until then, Crawford remains a Top Rank fighter, which suits De La Hoya.
“I think working with Bob [Arum] has always been a pleasure, so I am sure it would be no problem,” he said when discussing the idea of Ortiz-Crawford bout.
Crawford may have other plans, with the 33-year-old saying recently that the man he wants to face next is the WBA welterweight champion, Manny Pacquiao.
If Crawford does go a different route, then De La Hoya will still be sure to keep his young talent active in 2021.
“We do want to keep him busy with three or four fights,” De La Hoya said. “But he’s ready for a world title.”
