Promoter: Amir Khan Has Three Weeks To Activate Kell Brook Rematch Clause
Amir Khan has some time to decide if he wants to run things back with Kell Brook.
Khan faced Brook in their highly-anticipated welterweight grudge match this past weekend in Manchester, England.
Despite being very confident heading into the fight, Khan was outclassed and battered by Brook until the referee called an end to the contest in the sixth round.
Khan has since pondered retirement as he declared post-fight that the love of the sport wasn’t there for him anymore.
However, it could very well be in the heat of the moment and as we all know, there was a rematch clause going into the fight.
According to Boxxer CEO Ben Shalom, Khan has three weeks to activate it.
“The problem we’ve got, and no one has mentioned it so far, is that Amir Khan has a rematch clause in his contract,” Shalom told talkSPORT. “It’s not something we would advise and it’s something we don’t think Amir should do, but he does have that option.
“We have heard murmurs from his camp that he was jet lagged and didn’t take Kell too seriously. I don’t think it will happen, but it’s not something in our control. It is something we agreed to before the fight, something Kell agreed to before the fight and he has three weeks to decide if he wants to fight him again.
“Amir got demolished in that fight and I would expect that to happen again. Technically he would be entitled to that rematch.”
While Shalom is against Khan taking up the rematch, he will have no choice if the latter activates it.
Can he sell a rematch between the pair after how the first fight went?
“I think the only person who can sell that is Amir. I don’t know what’s in his head or what happened,” Shalom added. “What I saw was a one-way street and I felt Amir was finished.”
Do you think Amir Khan will activate his rematch clause? Or should he retire?
