Regis Prograis Claims Jose Ramirez Will Finally Want To Fight Him Now That He’s The Champ: ‘Jose Ramirez Been Ducking Me For Five Years’
Regis Prograis believes he will finally get the chance to fight Jose Ramirez.
Prograis claims to have wanted to fight Ramirez for a long time now but Ramirez has been ducking him for five years. Yet, on Saturday night, Prograis was crowned WBC super lightweight champion as he defeated Jose Zepeda by 11th-round knockout.
Following the win, Prograis took aim at Ramirez who is his mandatory as he wants the fight, and revealed Ramirez has ducked him for quite some time.
“Listen, Jose Ramirez been ducking me for five years,” Prograis said during his post-fight press conference (via BoxingScene). “And now I got this belt, and now he wanna fight me. But listen, that’s cool. We can [fight]. Now, listen, all right, it’s cool. Thank you, Jose Ramirez. We’ll fight.”
Although Regis Prograis is hoping to make the Jose Ramirez fight happen, he also has his eyes on other fights. He still wants the rematch with Josh Taylor, while the winner of Teofimo Lopez vs. Sandor Martin will become the second mandatory for him. He also mentions, Alberto Puello as a potential opponent but first thing first is likely a fight against Ramirez.
“Maybe we’ll do a unification,” Prograis said. “Maybe I’ll fight for the WBA. Maybe I’ll do that. Maybe, um, Jose Ramirez – he’s a mandatory. Everybody know if I had a hit list, Josh Taylor would be first on my hit list. So, I think it’s a lot of big opportunities out there for me. But um, we’ll see. We’ll see what they say.”
With the win, Prograis improved to 28-1 and is now on a four-fight win streak. His lone loss is a controversial decision to Taylor back in 2019. As for Ramirez, he’s 27-1 and earned a decision win over Jose Pedraza back in March to return to the win column after losing a decision to Taylor.
