Regis Prograis Says Teofimo Lopez ‘Needs To Get Rid Of His Daddy’ As His Trainer
Regis Prograis believes Teofimo Lopez needs to get rid of his dad as his trainer if he is going to have success.
Lopez had his second fight at 140lbs and won a controversial split decision over Sandor Martin. After the fight, Lopez was picked up by the mics asking his corner if he still has it.
“Bro, do I still have it, man?,” an emotional Lopez asked members of his team in a moment that was picked up by ESPN’s microphones (via BoxingScene). “Do I still got it?”
However, Lopez then said the fight was hard as he thought Martin didn’t want to fight him and was just running away.
It’s so hard to fight somebody like this, when they’re running the whole time,” Lopez told Osuna. “Every time this guy committed, I countered and got him every time. He just ran the whole time. It’s OK, though. We got a lot to work on. But first off, I want to thank God for this, no matter what it was. I apologize to everybody tonight. This is not how we perform. But listen, our dance partner was running the whole time. … Every time that this man wanted to commit, I was countering him and tagging him. That’s why he was running the whole time.”
After the fight, Teofimo Lopez called out some of the top fighters for his next fight, yet Prograis doesn’t think that would go well. Instead, he thinks in order for Lopez to have success, he needs to drop his dad as his coach.
“I think that he got caught up in his own hype and his dad got caught up in the hype,” said Prograis to BoxingScene.com. “I really think he needs to get rid of his daddy. It seems like his dad is living through his son and that’s never good because they put so much pressure on you. He needs to change his team up… Mentally he’s crumbling. You can just tell, mentally he’s crumbling”
At this time, it seems unlikely Teofimo Lopez would drop his dad as his trainer but it will be interesting to see what will be next for him.
