Report: Canelo Alvarez In Talks To Fight Jermall Charlo Next
Canelo Alvarez may not be facing Ilunga Makabu next after all.
Following his unification of the super middleweight division, Alvarez was expected to move up to cruiserweight and challenge Makabu for his WBC crown in May.
However, that appears to be no longer the case as according to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, Alvarez is much more likely to face Jermall Charlo.
In fact, there are talks right now over a Cinco de Mayo fight between the pair.
“I’m not so sure that Canelo [Alvarez] will be fighting at cruiserweight or against [Ilunga] Makabu. I’m hearing that it’s much more likely that he’s going to fight Jermall Charlo on Cinco de Mayo. There are talks right now for that fight.”
Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermall Charlo Next?
Charlo, of course, is the reigning WBC middleweight champion and has long called to face Alvarez in the past.
As for what weight a potential contest would take place at, it’s hard to say at the moment. But if one were to guess, Alvarez would likely fight Charlo at 168 pounds.
Regardless, an Alvarez vs. Charlo fight is one not many would complain about as it is one of the most anticipated matchups in recent memory.
