REPORT | Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez In Talks To Fight Sergiy Derevyanchenko
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is reportedly in talks for a fight with Sergiy Derevyanchenko that will take place at super-middleweight on September 14 if all goes to plan. A fight between ‘Canelo’ and British world champion Billy Joe Saunders was originally scheduled to take place on May 2 but was cancelled before it was even announced due to the ongoing global pandemic.
Saunders said in an interview last week he was still hopeful of landing a fight with the Mexican superstar but that bout now appears to be off the table according to Mike Coppinger of the Athletic, who told his Twitter followers.
“Sources: Canelo Alvarez-Sergiy Derevyanchenko in talks for Sept. 14 at 168. Canelo was set to fight Billy Joe Saunders, DAZN’s preferred May 2 foe, before pandemic hit. Other opponents being considered for Canelo, but it won’t be GGG. Unlikely to see Canelo-GGG 3 until early 2021.”
‘Canelo’ hasn’t fought since successfully stepping up to light-heavyweight to capture a world title in a fourth different division. The 29-year-old stopped long-time champion Sergey Kovalev in devastating fashion after 11 rounds of fighting. Before that, he beat Danny Jacobs impressively and twice went toe-to-toe with ‘GGG’.
Derevyanchenko is coming off a controversial loss to Gennady Golovkin last time out. The pair went to war over 12 rounds with the Kazakhstan fighter getting the unanimous decision verdict although many fans in attendance and around the world thought ‘GGG’ had lost the fight.
