Ronda Rousey: ‘For Damn Sure’ Floyd Mayweather Knew Who I Was

After winning ESPN’s ESPY award for Best Fighter Wednesday night (July 15, 2015), UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey made headlines by promptly calling out one of her competitors for the award, decorated boxing champ Floyd Mayweather Jr.

‘Rowdy’ implored ‘Money’ who has spent time in jail for domestic abuse, as to how it felt being beat by a woman for once, understandably inciting a media windfall for the outspoken comments.

Rousey recently spoke up to explain her barb at Mayweather in an interview at her UFC 190 media scrum courtesy of MMAjunkie.com, noting that she had taken offense to Mayweather supposedly pretending that he didn’t know who ‘he’ was last summer. The dominant women’s champ said she’s a patient woman willing to wait to exact her revenge, and she got the perfect platform to just that on Wednesday night:

“I know for damn sure he knew who I was,” Rousey said. “He was running against me for ‘Best Fighter’ that year and he had signed MMA fighters, so his feigned ignorance was meant to really be a snarky remark to me. …

“I don’t let those kind of things slide, but I’m also a patient girl. I’m not the kind of chick you make snarky remarks about. I waited a whole year to say something. And you know what? If I didn’t win ‘Best Fighter’ this year, I would have waited two years or three years.”

Rousey also added that the timing was certainly right for the callout, as she has a title bout to promote when she takes on rival Bethe Correia in the main event of August 1’s UFC 190 from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil:

“It got a big reaction, and I’ve got a fight to sell,” she said with a laugh. “So great timing, huh? I’m not dumb.”
