Sandy Ryan Calls For Mikaela Mayer Rematch After Paint Attack
Sandy Ryan is hoping to get an immediate rematch with Mikaela Mayer after the paint attack.
Ryan was leaving her hotel to travel to Madison Square Garden on Friday evening when a can of red paint was thrown at her. The NYPD has said they are investigating the matter, but Ryan has claimed it was Mayer’s team who did the attack.
Mayer ended up winning the fight by majority decision to win Ryan’s WBO welterweight belt and after the attack, Ryan is looking for the rematch.
“In light of everything that’s happened, I believe that an immediate rematch should be ordered. I have dedicated my life to this sport and am very grateful for the opportunities it has given me. Boxing deserves so much more than this kind of thuggery,” Ryan said in a statement. “I can guarantee that this will not break me and makes me more determined than ever to leave my mark in this sport over years to come.”
Mayer, meanwhile, says she was shocked after hearing of the attack but said she had nothing to do with it.
“I had no idea, I was shocked, I thought it was horrible,” Mayer told Sky Sports “I would never go that far. I know I get a little rough in the buildup [to the fight], but I would never go that far.”
Whether or not Ryan will get an immediate rematch with Mayer next time out is uncertain. But, Ryan believes she is deserving of the rematch after what happened to her before the fight.
With the loss to Mikaela Mayer, Sandy Ryan fell to 7-2-1 as a pro. Before the loss to Mayer, she beat Terri Harper after a draw to Jessica McCaskill. She has notable wins over Erica Farias, Anahi Ester Sanchez, and Kirstie Bavington.
