Shakur Stevenson Believes George Kambosos Jr. vs. Maxi Hughes Was A Robbery
Shakur Stevenson thinks Maxi Hughes should’ve got the win over George Kambosos Jr. over the weekend.
Hughes and Kambosos Jr. had a back-and-forth fight and when the final bell rang it was the Australian edging out a decision. The judges scored the fight 117-111, 115-113 and 114-114 for a majority decision win over Kambosos Jr.
However, after the fight, Stevenson was vocal in saying it was a robbery and Hughes should’ve gotten the win.
“I thought it was a robbery,” Stevenson said (h/t BoxingScene). “I thought Maxi boxed well and I thought he was a better fighter.”
According to Shakur Stevenson, he believes Hughes was able to avoid Kambosos Jr. big shots and was able to land jabs constantly. With that, Stevenson hopes boxing judges improve as he says it is a problem for the sport.
“I think that the judges should be held to a higher criteria,” Stevenson said. “I think that they should be as focused as the boxers and I think that they need a lot more [training] to become a judge. So, I feel like they not watching the fights and they’re not really paying too much attention to the fights, and I think it’s messing up boxing.”
With Shakur Stevenson taking aim at George Kambosos Jr., many thought the fight would happen. However, Stevenson says he is focused on fighting the best and doesn’t think Kambosos Jr. is that good.
“I wanna fight the best of the best, so as of right now, Kambosos is not on my level,” Stevenson said. “I wanna fight the Lomachenkos, the Devin Haneys, Gervonta Davis. Them the fights that I’m looking for. If you see me fightin’ Kambosos, y’all know I’m gonna stop him. That’s how I feel about it, so I don’t feel like he’s on that level. But if I don’t got no choice, and he’s the next step down, I’ll beat him up, too.”
