Errol Spence Does Not Want Keith Thurman Fight: “Fuck Keith Thurman”
We don’t yet know what’s next for WBC and IBF Welterweight Champion Errol Spence Jr after December 5, but we do know what he doesn’t want, a fight with Keith Thurman.
There was a point in time that he wanted this fight, but that point has passed. Spence made his thoughts on Thurman clear when asked about him by Brian Custer on ‘The Last Stand Podcast‘:
“I guess I’m moving up or going down. One of the two, because, I mean, that shit ain’t happening. Fuck Keith Thurman.”
Custer then asked why Thurman clearly rubs him (Spence) the wrong way:
“I don’t like him. That’s just one guy I just never liked. Like there’s a lot of boxers out there that I really don’t care for. But him, I just don’t like him. I just feel like he’s just fake. Everything about him, I just don’t like him at all.”
The 30-year-old Spence is gearing up to face 32-year-old Danny Garcia, a title-defending effort coming December 5. After that, it gets a bit blurry when thinking of what’s next for Spence.
Spence comes into the fight with a perfect 26-0 record with 21 victories coming via knockout, while Garcia comes into the fight with a record of 36-2 with 21 knockouts.
Assuming Spence defeats Garcia, he’s made it clear he doesn’t want Thurman, so what comes after?
The 32-year-old Thurman hasn’t fought since his split decision title-losing defeat to Manny Pacquiao back in July of last year, a fight that cost him his undefeated record, as he fell to 29-1 (1 NC).
Also assuming Spence doesn’t face Thurman next, perhaps he’ll be matched up with another top welterweight. It’s kind of odd for a fighter to not fight someone simply because they don’t like them, generally that makes them want to fight that individual more.
Spence has already defeated Shawn Porter (30-3-1), so we can cross him out. There’s WBA Super Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao (62-7-2), who Spence has stated he’d like to fight. That’d make for a very compelling match up, a perfect old dog versus new breed type of match up.
There’s also WBO Welterweight Champion Terence Crawford (36-0), who really, he makes the most sense. These are by far the two best 147 lb boxers on the planet. These two would have an epic chess match we’d all love to watch.
Who would you like to see Errol Spence Jr face after presumably defeating Danny Garcia?
