Sunny Edwards Frustrated Eye Went Out So Early, Vows To Be Back
Sunny Edwards was disappointed his eye gave out his in title fight against Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez on Saturday.
Edwards was defending his IBF flyweight title while fighting for Rodriguez’s WBO flyweight title. It was an intriguing matchup as Edwards entered the matchup with a 20-0 record, but in the second round, his eye began to swell.
After taking more damage, Sunny Edwards’ corner stopped the fight before the tenth round, which was disappointing to the Brit.
“This is a hell of a fighter. My tricks that usually get me out of the way of shots, he was getting on to them. I just couldn’t see. From the second round, my eye was completely blurry and from about round six I got cut. It was getting hard in there, more through the vision,” Edwards told BBC Radio 5 Live (h/t BoxingScene). “I’m bitterly disappointed, but grateful to be in the main event. Flyweight boxers, we don’t get this. I’ll be back. Boxing is all I’ve got. Just a bit disappointed my eye went so early on. But, yes, no excuses from me.”
Although the loss is disappointing and frustrating for Sunny Edwards, he’s confident he will come back stronger and eventually avenge this loss to Bam Rodriguez.
Sunny Edwards (20-1) is coming off the loss to Rodriguez, but before that, scored a decision win over Andre Campos. In his career, the Brit holds notable wins over Felix Alvardo, Muhammed Waseem, and Morui Mthalane among others.
Bam Rodriguez (19-0), meanwhile, picked up the biggest win of his career on Saturday with the stoppage win over Sunny Edwards. Rodriguez is now the WBO and IBF flyweight champion and has notable wins over Israel Gonzalez and Carlos Cuadras.
