Teddy Atlas Believes Ryan Garcia’s Behavior Needs NYSAC’s Attention
Teddy Atlas thinks the NYSAC needs to look into Ryan Garcia.
Garcia and Haney are set to box on April 20 but in the lead-up to the fight Garcia has been posting troubling comments on social media which many fans think has been scary. Atlas is one of the many people who think the New York State Athletic Commission need to address it and make sure Garcia is good enough to fight.
“If you’re a commission and you do not force him to see qualified psychiatric people to be evaluated … shut the commission down,” Atlas said on Thursday’s episode of ProBox TV’s “Deep Waters.” “Why are the taxpayers paying for that commission if they’re going to behave like this in a case like this?…
“There’s no sense in having a commission with all the stuff that’s out that we’ve seen,” Atlas said. “That scares us. It’s scary. He’s smoking weed, drinking a bottle of liquor, saying he got kidnapped by a group that took him into the woods and forced him to watch little kids get raped. …When a guy put in a huge fight is in that kind of mental condition.”
However, Ryan Garcia has said if the NYSAC looks into him or forces him to do something, the boxer says he will sue the NYSAC.
“I’m gonna sue the NYC commission and I’m saying this why?” Garcia said. “They’re trying to challenge me for a mental evaluation. I said, ‘OK, what is your premises [sic] for the mental evaluation?’ ‘Well, your tweets and posts.’ I said, ‘Is it not my U.S. constitutional right to have free speech?’ So, because I’m tweeting what I’m tweeting, that’s premises for a mental evaluation? That’s curious. Now you’re trying to mess with my constitutional rights. Now I’m going to sue you. I’m going to sue for defamation of character actually.”
