Teofimo Lopez ‘I Was Just The Underground King. Now, I’ve Been Crowned’
After this past weekend’s clash, Teofimo Lopez has no interest in sharing the ring again with Vasyl Lomachenko anytime soon.
Lopez shocked the world with his unanimous decision victory over Lomachenko, which saw the 23-year-old become the unified lightweight world champion. In an interview with TMZ, Lopez spoke on what happened after the fight.
“I went up to him, and I said good fight. I grabbed his father. I said safe travels, you know, pretty much saying goodbye to them because I knew I won,” Lopez said.
“But he didn’t want to give me back that same gesture; instead, he started laughing like, ‘What am I doing here?’ So, I was like whatever, I did my part. The fighting’s done, I whooped your ass, you cut me, head-butted me and sh*t, but it’s fine.”
When asked if he would entertain the thought of a rematch, Lopez was quick to shoot down any suggestion of squaring off against Lomachenko next.
“For what? F**k him. I won fair and square,” he commented.
“I beat him, not only at his own the game, but on top of that being off for ten months and fighting the guy that everybody said was the pound for pound.
“I think everybody’s just upset, if the ones that do want this rematch, hey, I’m the king now, I’ve always been the king. I was just the underground king. Now, I’ve been crowned.”
Lopez knows that fighters like Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney will soon be coming for his belts, and while he is more than happy to face whoever is next in line, he feels fighters need to go out there and build their case as to why they should face him next.
“They need me. You know what I mean? I don’t need them. You know me. I am a fighter man. I go out there. If you want to talk, I am ready to step up to the plate.
“Now, the only thing that changes is that they got to show me something now.”
Who do you think Lopez should fight next?
