Teofimo Lopez Opens Up On Murky Future
Teofimo Lopez has opened up on his murky future in the sport of boxing.
Lopez is coming off a decision win over Josh Taylor in June to win the WBO 140lbs title. Since then, he claimed he was retiring from the sport, but a few months later, walked back on that decision. The WBO also elevated Lopez to “Super Champion,” a designation that gives the fighter more flexibility to pursue non-mandated title defenses.
However, since then, there has been no word on when Teofimo Lopez may return and he now says he isn’t sure about his future.
“I bring too many demands and I don’t get nothin’ back,” Lopez told BoxingScene.com… But it’s more than that (monetary reasons for not fighting). I have my son and I haven’t spent time with him, to be honest. You know, he’s about to be two next week. With that being said, I’ve only spent nine months with him. You know what I mean?”
When asked if he has plans to fight next year, Lopes gave a shocking answer.
“We don’t have no plans right now,” he said.
Teofimo Lopez then said he wanted to weigh his options, but isn’t sure if he will box in 2024 despite being the current champ.
“We want to weigh our options. We couldn’t weigh our options when I became undisputed the first time. So I just want to weigh my options this time,” Lopez added.
Teofimo Lopez (19-1) is coming off the decision win over Taylor to extend his win streak to three. Also on the win streak, he beat Sandor Martin by split decision and Pedro Campa by TKO. Prior to that, he suffered his first defeat which was by split decision to George Kambosos Jr. in his first attempt to defend the unified lightweight titles.
Do you think we see Teofimo Lopez fight in 2024?
