Teofimo Lopez Wonders If He Still Has It After Split Decision Win Over Sandor Martin
Teofimo Lopez had some interesting thoughts after his split decision win over Sandor Martin on Saturday.
When the final bell rang, many thought Martin would be getting his hand raised and pulling off the upset. Before the decision was read, the cameras picked Lopez up asking his corner if he still has it.
“Bro, do I still have it, man?,” an emotional Lopez asked members of his team in a moment that was picked up by ESPN’s microphones (via BoxingScene). “Do I still got it?”
His team made it clear that he still has it but it was a closer fight than many expected. But, in the end, Lopez was the one who got his hand raised as he won a split decision as the judges scored the fight, 97-92, 96-93 and 95-94 for Martin.
Although Teofimo Lopez wasn’t too happy with his performance, he does believe some blame is on Sandor Martin. The former champ didn’t think Martin wanted to fight, and rather just wanted to run.
“It’s so hard to fight somebody like this, when they’re running the whole time,” Lopez told Osuna. “Every time this guy committed, I countered and got him every time. He just ran the whole time. It’s OK, though. We got a lot to work on. But first off, I want to thank God for this, no matter what it was. I apologize to everybody tonight. This is not how we perform. But listen, our dance partner was running the whole time. … Every time that this man wanted to commit, I was countering him and tagging him. That’s why he was running the whole time.”
Lopez improved to 18-1 as a pro and before the split decision win over Martin he TKO’d Pedro Campa in his 140lbs debut. The win over Campa returned him to win column after a stunning decision loss to George Kambosos Jr. to lose his lightweight titles.
Do you think Teofimo Lopez can be a title contender at 140lbs?
