Tony Bellew May End Retirement To ‘Make A Fool’ Of Andy Ruiz
Former WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew wants to end his 18-month retirement from boxing to “make a fool” of Mexican heavyweight Andy Ruiz.
Bellew retired from the sport after being knocked out by Oleksandr Usyk when they fought for all the cruiserweight belts in November 2018. Less than two years later the 37-year-old appears to be ready to make a boxing comeback against Mexico’s first heavyweight champion Ruiz.
Speaking to his former promoter Eddie Hearn on the latest episode of ‘Talk The Talk’ Bellew considered if he was willing to make a comeback to humiliate Ruiz, he said
“I don’t think l am the same animal anymore but I think I could still turn into it. I think I can switch at any minute but it is whether your body and mind can do the 12-week camp and sparring sessions needed to prepare for a fight.
“I do still feel I could do it, I had a couple of wars but I was never shot or battered. I still feel I could beat people, I am confident I would play with Andy Ruiz Jr and make a fool out of him. But would I be willing to risk it all and put everything on the line again? I doubt it.”
Hearn went on to explain how the Ruiz fight had become a possibility and warned the scouse knockout artist against making a comeback, he said.
“We had a chat the other day and he started talking about fighters and he said he wanted Andy Ruiz Jr. His name came up and Tony said: ‘get me him’. In Tony’s famous words he said ‘I’ll f*** him’. “But I said ‘Tony, please don’t do it, I think you have too many good people around you now who would not let you do it.’”
