Trainer Says Terence Crawford Fighting Canelo Alvarez At 168lbs Is a Step Too Far
Bob Santos a renowned boxing trainer believes Terence Crawford could have some problems boxing Canelo Alvarez at 168lbs.
Crawford has been vocal in chasing the Alvarez fight and the hope is, he can get the fight if the Mexican gets past Edgar Berlanga on Sept. 14. However, the fight would likely happen at 168lbs, and if that is the case, Santos thinks that will be difficult for Crawford.
“I think it’ll be a step too big for him but he has earned the right to try it,” Santos told BoxingScene. “Well, I think that’s true but we have to remember that what makes a guy like Crawford great is challenges. That’s why he’s great. That’s why he’s done what he’s done. Now, that said, I think Canelo would be too big and too strong for him at 168. I could be wrong. He could prove us wrong. But for the most part, I think that’s just a lot to ask of Bud to go to 168.”
Although Bob Santos thinks fighting Canelo Alvarez at 168lbs would be a step too far, the trainer says those big risks is what made Terence Crawford one of the best boxers ever, so he isn’t ruling out Crawford pulling off the upset.
“I may think it’s a step too far, but that’s what makes him great. That’s why he was able to win at 135, 140, 147, and now 154. And he’s been successful every single time, so he’s at least earned that right. That’s what makes him great. But guess what? That’s Bud’s mindset and it’s his legacy to take the risks.”
Terence Crawford is 41-0 and coming off a decision win over Israil Madrimov back in August. Before that, he had a dominant TKO win over Errol Spence Jr., which was a statement-making performance.
