Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder III Betting Preview
Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder are set to square off for a third time on October 9. Ahead of the eagerly anticipated heavyweight trilogy bout, Fury is considered a pretty big favourite with highly-rated bookmaker Betway. Join Boxing Daily as we look ahead to the fight, consider the deep history these two fighters share, and let you know how they see the fight playing out before offering our official prediction.
The History
Fury and Wilder first fought in 2018. ‘The Gypsy King’ was on the comeback trail after spending almost three years out of the boxing ring as he struggled with mental health and drug-related issues. After two warm-up bouts, Fury was given the chance to face off against ‘The Bronze Bomber’ for the only heavyweight title (WBC) that he was yet to win during his professional career.
It turned out to be a highly intriguing and somewhat controversial fight. Fury looked close to his best for large portions of the bout. The Englishman used his slick boxing skills to dance around Wilder for much of the fight. In round nine, a glancing blow knocked Fury to the canvas. A few rounds later, he was down once again only this time it didn’t look like Fury was going to make the count. Amazingly he did. Even more amazingly, Fury actually went on to have perhaps his best round of the fight. Ultimately, both men survived to see the final bell. It seemed like a pretty conclusive win for Fury on paper. However, the judges didn’t agree and Wilder retained his belt due to a split draw verdict.
After a couple of interim fights, Fury and Wilder had their inevitable rematch in February 2020. ‘The Gypsy King’ seemed intent on taking the fight out of the judges’ hands from the first bell. He pressed forward and put a beating on Wilder for seven rounds before Mark Breland mercifully threw in the towel to save his fighter from further punishment.
Neither fighter has fought since this bout. Wilder has been busy making up excuses about why he lost the fight and he’s got plenty of them. Fury has been chasing an undisputed fight with Anthony Joshua but that fight fell through when an arbitrator ruled that Fury is contractually obligated to give Wilder a third fight.
The bout was originally set to take place on July 24. Unfortunately, Fury and members of his team tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, the trilogy fight will now take place in October.
The Predictions
Tyson Fury is super confident ahead of his third fight with Wilder and who can blame him after he put on such a dominant display last time out.
In June, the 32-year-old told ESPN that he expects to stop Wilder inside three rounds.
“I don’t think you can get much more of a one-sided affair than the last fight, you know, Fury said. “Hopefully, I’m going to take him out early this time. Seven rounds, he lasted last time, which is a lot of time to get beat up on or whatever. So, this time I’m hoping to take him out early. One, two, three rounds, max.”
In the same month, Deontay Wilder spoke with Fight Hype. While he stopped shy of predicting the round, Wilder seemed confident that his sensational knockout power will shine through on fight night.
“Well, what makes me so exciting as a fighter and what people come to see, they come to see knockout,” Wilder said. “And they know that out of any heavyweight if they want to get a for sure knockout, come to a Deontay Wilder fight, that’s what I’m all about baby. At the end of the day, that fight gonna end in the knockout, and that’s what I’m looking forward to.
The Fight
Fury is a huge -330 favourite heading into this fight. It’s really hard to look past ‘The Gypsy King’ getting another win in October. He’s proven he can beat Wilder with slick boxing skills and also with pure aggression, pressure and power punches too.
Wilder has a puncher’s chance but that’s about it and his +250 odds of victory are fairly reasonable considering we’ve already seen how this fight plays out on two occasions.
Ultimately, we are backing Fury to get another win over Wilder and hopefully end this one-sided rivalry once and for all. Fury is simply too good. Wilder simply has too many flaws and too much catching up to do to have any reasonable chance of winning this fight.
