UFC President Dana White To Promote Claressa Shields vs. Marie-Eve Dicaire Title Fight Under Zuffa Boxing Banner
Zuffa Boxing is a real thing and it’s first event it will promote is a title fight between Claressa Shields and Marie-Eve Dicaire.
According to Journal de Montreal, Zuffa Boxing will promote Shields’ upcoming title defense against Dicaire. The event will reportedly take place on December 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada which is a night before UFC 256.
Originally, the two were supposed to fight on May 9 with a different promoter, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was canceled. Following that, the two were in negotiations with White and after coming to agreement Zuffa Boxing will promote the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO super-welterweight title fight.
It is not surprising to see White finally get into boxing. This is something he has wanted to do for years, but recently, he claimed the sport was so broken he couldn’t fix it.
“The world of boxing hasn’t been able to do what I’ve been able to do [in MMA] over the last 20 years.
“If they can’t do things when the world is normal, you can’t expect them to do things when the world is crazy,” White said to BT Sport in September. “I peaked under the hood a lot there for the last year. Looked at different things and I said, ‘I don’t know man, I don’t know if this is fixable.’
“Funny enough, since the pandemic I’ve been looking at other options too. And we’ll probably have something to announce here soon. Yeah [it is in the world of boxing]. When it’s time, I’ll let you know, I’m not ready yet. But [it’ll be] in the next couple of weeks.”
Claressa Shields enters this fight at 10-0 and in January became the fastest ever to win titles in 3 divisions male or female in history.
Marie-Eve Dicaire, meanwhile, is 17-0, and has fought only in Canada in her career. The 34-year-old is currently the IBF light middleweight champion.
