Vasyl Lomachenko To Face Shakur Stevenson If He Beats George Kambosos Jr.
Vasyl Lomachenko will be facing Shakur Stevenson next time out, should he beat George Kambosos Jr. this weekend.
Lomachenko is the former lightweight champion and is coming off a decision loss to Devin Haney last time out. It was a close fight, and after it, he will now return against Kambosos.
Should Lomachenko get his hand raised against Kambosos, he will face Stevenson next, according to Bob Arum.
“I have this other fighter, Shakur Stevenson,” Arum told Sky Sports. “So if Lomachenko wins, and Shakur –who is scheduled to fight in July – wins, then for the fall to do a Lomachenko-Shakur fight. Every serious boxing fan will be watching that in awe, between two great technicians fighting for a unified title. Let’s see what happens. Kambosos is very good. Even though he doesn’t come from Perth, he’s fighting on home territory, which means something.”
Although Lomachenko will be boxing Stevenson next, Arum knows he can’t overlook Kambosos. He believes Kambosos poses a real threat to the former champ, which makes the fight exciting.
“Kambosos is a real threat,” Arum said. “He can get up for a fight, he’s very talented. Lomachenko is super-talented, but again there is his age, particularly in the lighter-weight divisions, where age is more of a factor than in the heavyweight divisions.”
Lomachenko enters the bout with a record of 17-3 and before the loss to Haney, he was on a three-fight winning streak with wins over Jamaine Ortiz, Richard Commey and Masayoshi Nakatani.
Shakur Stevenson, meanwhile, is 21-0 as a pro and is the WBC lightweight champion. Stevenson is set to defend the belt for the first time against Artem Harutyunyan on July 6.
