WBA Orders Yordenis Ugas vs. Eimantas Stanionis To Happen Within 118 Days
Yordenis Ugas must fight Eimantas Stanionis within the next 118 days, as the WBA announced the fight must happen by January 13, 2022.
The secondary belt-holder Jamal James was also ordered to face mandatory challenger Radzhab Butaev before November 2021. The winners would then likely meet by March 2022, for the honor of being the WBA’s lone welterweight champion.
The news was well-received by many boxing fans as they want to see the division move forward and the WBA believes the moves were necessary.
“The world’s oldest body continues working on its title reduction plan at the request of the fans and the press. The WBA believes it is going in the right direction and is making every effort to fulfill the plan.”
Yordenis Ugas (27-4) is coming off a decision victory over Manny Pacquiao back in August to retain his WBA (Super) welterweight title, in a fight he took on short notice after Errol Spence Jr. was forced out of the bout with an eye injury. Before the win over Pacquiao – which is the biggest win of his career – he was on a three-fight winning streak. During that run, he beat Abel Ramos by split decision to win the belt, Mike Dallas Jr., and Omar Figueroa Jr. after losing by split decision to Shawn Porter for the WBC welterweight title. He holds notable wins over Cosme Rivera, Jamal James, and Thomas Dulorme among others.
Eimantas Stanionis (13-0 and one No Contest) also fought back in August where he fought Luis Collazo to a No Contest due to an accidental head clash. Prior to that, he defeated Thomas Dulorme by decision. Out of his 13 wins, nine have come by knockout but Ugas will be the toughest test of his career.
