WBC President Says They Would Approve Anthony Joshua To Face Winner Of Usyk-Fury
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman is open to having Anthony Joshua fight the winner of Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury next time out.
Joshua is coming off a second-round knockout of former UFC heavyweight champ Francis Ngannou, which was a statement-making performance.
Now, following the win, according to Sulaiman, the WBC would approve Joshua getting the winner of Usyk-Fury if a rematch doesn’t happen.
“The WBC was presented with a sanction request to fight for the undisputed,” Sulaiman told Sky Sports. “The WBC accepted that sanctioning, and we accepted the rematch they requested. But if it has nothing to do with contractual or promotion, we would absolutely accept the winner to fight Joshua.”
However, Sulaiman says the WBC wouldn’t interfere in a potential rematch between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou. But, the president is open to getting Joshua the next title shot.
“The WBC has been very attentive to this matter [governance interference from sanctioning bodies],” Sulaiman said. “So we have completely freed the ground for the undisputed, for a rematch, and for another fight of that level. The WBC position right now is very open to supporting the undisputed champion taking on the fights that the fans want to see.”
Anthony Joshua is now 28-3 and coming off the KO win over Francis Ngannou. The Brit is on a four-fight winning streak after losing back-to-back fights to Usyk to lose his heavyweight titles. On the winning streak, Joshua also beat Otto Wallin and Robert Helenius by stoppage and Jermaine Franklin by decision.
In his career, Joshua holds notable wins over Joseph Parker, Andy Ruiz Jr., Alexander Povetkin, and Kubrat Pulev among others.
