Wladimir Klitschko Enlists in Ukraine’s Reserve Army To Help Defend Against Russian Invasion
Wladimir Klitschko has enlisted in Ukraine’s reserve army to help defend against a possible Russian invasion.
The former unified heavyweight champion told reporters that his love for his country compelled him to defend it against a potential invasion by Russia. For weeks, there have been rumors regarding a possible military attack by Russia as they have thousands of troops by the border. Wladimir’s brother, Vitali Klitschko, also left boxing to pursue a full-time political career and is currently the mayor of Kiev.
“One district from here, my little girl is going to school. The school is currently closed because the ambassadors have sent the families home,” Wladimir Klitschko said, according to Reuters. “It is the love, the love for my city, my home, my family, my neighbors, my daughter that has brought me here today, that I took this initiative and am now taking part in this territorial defense.”
According to Vitali Klitschko, he says the hope is Ukraine and Russia can talk things out and no military action will be needed. But, he says Ukraine is ready to fight if needed.
“If not, we have to prepare to take weapons in our hands, and defend the country,” Vitali Klitschko said.
Wladimir Klitschko is 45-years-old, ended his career on a two-fight losing streak as he suffered a decision loss to Tyson Fury to lose his heavyweight titles. He then fought Anthony Joshua in the next fight in 2017 and suffered a TKO loss. He ended his career with a record of 64-5 and is the former unified heavyweight champion and holds notable wins over Kubrat Pulev, Alexander Povetkin, David Haye, Tony Thompson, and Bryant Jennings among countless others. In his career, he fought in 29 world title fights.
