Yordenis Ugas Still Contemplating Fighting Future
Former WBA welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas is uncertain about his boxing future.
Ugas is still recovering from an eye injury and is coming off a decision loss to Mario Barrios back in September. During that fight, Ugas had severe inflammation of the same right eye that caused him problems against Errol Spence Jr., which he lost by TKO.
According to Ugas, with him once again dealing with an eye injury, he’s uncertain if he will box again.
“I don’t know yet [regarding my future],” Ugas told George Ebro (h/t BoxingScene). “I’m still practically recovering, taking care of my eye. Let’s go see what happens. I haven’t made a decision yet. I have spent many years watching fighters who had a bad night, lost and then retired. After a year or two they return. When I say something, it will be something firm. If I say I’m going to fight, I’m going to fight. If I say no, I won’t do it. I don’t want it to be something made on impulse on a certain night.”
If Yordenis Ugas doesn’t box again, he says he has made peace with that as he’s happy with how his career has turned out.
“Thank God I have been doing my job,” added Ugas. “I go to the gym in Las Vegas and all the guys treat me like a legend: ‘Ugás, Ugás.’ They treat me like an old man, but everything is fine. I feel good and thank God. I have done my job. I am happy with everything that has happened. Whatever happens I’m fine. If I fight or I don’t fight, I’m fine.”
Yordenis Ugas (27-6) is on a two-fight losing streak and coming off the decision loss to Mario Barrios while before that, suffered a TKO loss to Errol Spence Jr. In his career, Ugas holds notable wins over Manny Pacquiao, Thomas Dularme, and Omar Figueroa Jr. among others.
