Young Boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata Dies Following TKO Loss
An 18-year-old boxer has passed away as a result of her injuries inside the ring.
Jeanette Zacarias Zapata had a boxing match with Marie-Pier Houle on Aug. 28. Houle won the bout via TKO and Zapata was assessed inside the ring. After receiving medical attention on-site, Zapata was rushed to the hospital. Zapata had reportedly suffered a seizure in the ring and was carried off on a stretcher. She died on Sept. 2.
Yvon Michel, event organizer, issued the following statement.
“It is with great sadness and torment that we learned, from a representative of her family, that Jeanette Zacarias Zapata passed away this afternoon at 3:45 pm. The entire team at Groupe Yvon Michel team is extremely distressed by this painful announcement. We would like to offer our most sincere condolences to her family, loved ones, friends and especially her husband Jovanni Martinez who was at her bedside until her last moments.
Jovanni is devastated and extremely upset. Under the circumstances he does not wish to comment, therefore we ask that you respect his decision and allow the family to have their privacy.
“In this painful period, you will understand that Groupe Yvon Michel does not intend to comment further. Thank you for your understanding.”
According to BoxRec, this was Zapata’s sixth pro boxing fight. She had a record of 2-3 going into last weekend’s fight. As for Houle, she was 3-0, 1 NC ahead of the bout. Zapata had been knocked out in a bout back in May.
The death of Zapata is being investigated in Quebec, Canada. Michel said he will give his full cooperation.
“Mrs. Geneviève Guilbault I can assure you of our full collaboration and complete transparency with Coroner Quebec regarding the investigation of the sad tragedy we are all afflicted with.”
