Zhilei Zhang Eyes Fight With Tyson Fury If He Beats Joe Joyce In Their Rematch
Zhilei Zhang hopes to secure a fight with Tyson Fury next time out.
Zhang is set to rematch Joe Joyce on September 23 at Wembley Arena in London. Zhang is defending his WBO interim heavyweight title after he won the belt with a shocking knockout win over Joyce back in April.
Although if Zhang wins he would be the mandatory for Oleksandr Usyk, Zhilei Zhang says that fight isn’t one that interests him. Instead, he says he would want to box Tyson Fury who has worked with Joyce in the past which adds to the storyline.
“Our focus is still the battle with Joyce. After Joyce, fighting with Tyson Fury would be my next target. Last time I made history, the best inheritance of history is to create new history,” Zhang said to CGTN Europe. “Creating a new history of the Chinese in the field of boxing is my mission and my original intention. People always think Chinese boxing can’t produce heavyweight boxers, and Chinese boxing can’t compete with European and American boxing. I don’t agree. I believe Chinese boxing will definitely occupy the most central position on the international stage.”
Although Zhilei Zhang is hoping to get into a fight with Tyson Fury should he beat Joe Joyce, he still needs to beat Joyce before that. As well, it’s uncertain if Fury would even be interested in a scrap with Zhang as ‘The Gypsy King’ has been vocal in only wanting to unify the belts which are against Oleksandr Usyk.
Zhilei Zhang is currently 25-1-1 and coming off the win against Joe Joyce and before that, dropped to a decision to Filip Hrgovic. In his career, he holds notable wins over Devin Vargas, Andriy Rudenko, and Peter Graham among others.
