Betting Odds

Two former champions are set to collide on May 12th in in Perth, Australia.

Three-weight titleholder Vasiliy Lomachenko will look to win one of the belts he came so close to claiming last year when he takes on ex-unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr.

They’ll clash for the vacant 135lb IBF belt and also for the chance to put themselves in line for fights with some of the biggest stars in boxing.

Vasiliy Lomachenko

Lomachenko is a big -700 favourite in what appears on paper to be an evenly-matched fight between two ex-champions trying to get their careers back on track.

Why is that? The main reason is probably the fact that many people think he should’ve been the undisputed lightweight king after his last fight with Devin Haney.

The 36-year-old may have lost by unanimous decision, but he came away from the fight with a ton of credit after doing much better than Kambosos did in his two fights with the American.

‘Hi-Tech’ has scored knockouts in 11 of his 17 professional wins and is +240 to add another KO to his resume. However, that will a tough bet to cash against an opponent as resilient as Kambosos.

A decision win seems the much safer bet on Lomachenko and the oddsmakers think so too – that’s why they’ve priced it at -175.

You’ll have to bet big to make any serious money backing Lomachenko this weekend. It’s now just about deciding if he’s such a sure thing that it’s worth it.

George Kambosos Jr.

Kambosos has a win over Teofimo Lopez, who beat Lomachenko, so it might seem unfair that he is a +450 underdog heading into their fight at the RAC Arena.

However, a glance at his recent record tells you everything you need to know.

‘Ferocious’ was very lucky to get a win over Maxi Hughes in his last fight after failing to land a glove on Haney, who just lost to Ryan Garcia, over 24 rounds of boxing.

Kambosos picked up three contentious split decision wins on the bounce to become a champion, but there’s clearly a feeling from fans that he was elevated to a position he didn’t earn.

Therefore, he’s priced at +1200 to score a KO win against Lomachenko, who may have three defeats on his record but it’s only because he’s taken every challenge available and moved up through the divisions at a rapid rate.

A decision win at +850 seems much more likely but is still a long shot against a man celebrated as one of the most technical boxers on the planet.

Official prediction

Like many people, we believe Lomachenko will win this fight impressively.

Kambosos doesn’t have the technical ability to compete with him over 12 rounds and will find himself being touched up by the superior boxer all night.

Despite his flaws, Kambosos is a tough fighter, and we don’t believe he will be one of the men who say ‘No mas’ when he realizes there’s no way to win against Lomachenko.

Our expectation is that he will get outclassed for the vast majority of the fight and ultimately fall to wide points defeat like he did against Haney.

Lomachenko by decision at -175 is our official pick for this fight.
